The Peregrine Chick:
--- Quote from: Mother Hen on June 12, 2008, 10:17 ---Our feathered friend were out late night and were not home early this morning but are there now.Sure is cool to see them circle way up.....Tracy, do Peregrines mate for life??
--- End quote ---
Yes Mother, they do. However (you knew there would be one of these), "for life" has a few shades of grey. When there are territorial battles, they are gender specific, female against female, male against male, not female & male against interloper. So a male can "lose" his mate when she loses a fight, and vice versa. Or a male or female may take a sabbatical and then return and pickup where they left off, or not.
Here are a few examples ...
* T-Rex spent his first summer with a female at the U of M (don't remember her band number), the next summer, Madame at the U of M - he fed the captive-bred chicks we were hacking. She appeared in town the December before, and he brought food for her too. He migrated out, she didn't migrate (another story). Next spring, she moved into the Radisson territory and took up with the original Delta/Radisson male and was with him for the next three years. T-Rex in the meantime was paired up and producing young successfully with Burnsie, a Brandon released female. In 1995, the original Delta/Radisson male (and T-Rex's Dad) disappeared about two weeks into incubation and T-Rex ditched Burnsie (they didn't have eggs) and came in and adopted his father's eggs and his "widow" (no idea if Pop actually died, never found anything). T-Rex and Madame stayed together for about three years before he failed to return and she took up with Simba, a nephew of T-Rex for two years and then she was hooked up with Trey for three years and then we didn't seem him at all in 2003 but Madame was still at the Radisson. She appears to have been escorted out of the territory by Princess in 2004 and Trey and Princess have been together ever since.
* This year Princess rebuffed the attentions of her son Ivy (not because he's a son, Madame and Trey were mother and son) because she was waiting for Trey and Trey's time wasn't up yet.
* Out in Brandon, Holly was paired with Zeus for three years, then he went on sabbatical for 2007 and she paired up with Screech. Zeus returned in 2008 and Holly returned to him - no sign of Screech this year at all.
So "for life" has different meanings ... and can be kinda flexible ...
ballywing:
Seems they're hanging around the penthouse nestbox now, which is a good sign. I don't know how Peregrines 'think' -but I would hope they now have an instinctive feeling of 'NO WAY' at the idea of re-nesting on that ledge in future.... :o. ...As for names - Kyle is a great idea, also Larry and Tracy - in honor of those who really give of themselves for these creatures. ;D
eagle63_1999:
Oh yeah good idea freeshia, one be name Kyle in Honor of the hero.
Lauren, there is drainage on the nest ledge and it was simply a case of too much rain too fast. Even the streets in Winnipeg were flooding because it was too much too fast. I believe Tracy addressed this topic in a previous discussion/thread, just not sure right now where to locate it.
Pchemist:
Lauren,
There is a long thread about this idea - turns out it's much harder than we might think. I think the topic is something like "ways to improve nest site" or something. Might take a look and see if you can think of something new? Creative minds needed!
