The webcam has been up for a day. They decided to have it go live even though there is still some tinkering they need to do to the cam. They felt that we eagle lovers should see it as they go along instead of waiting til it was perfect for them. Yes the top cam is Hornby Island and the one below it is the Decorah, Iowa webcam. The Hornby Island webcam is not in the same tree as the nest. In fact the cam is about 250 from the nest. None the less it is a different perspective, the anonymous volunteers have taken us on a tour of the island with the cam. We have zoomed up to the nest. It is wonderful that we are back home in Hornby Island! It is beautiful scenery where the eagles have nested. What struck me was watching mom and dad leaving and coming back was absolutely remarkable! We will get to see the lives of the eagles in the nest and away from the nest. Enjoy!

It is too bad that we will no longer have this wonderful Eagle webcam, but Doug & Sheila Carrick have given so much of their lives to these wonderful raptors and I, too, am grateful for all that they have shared with us. I wish them well as they journey on to new adventures and more joy in their lives, whatever that looks like for them.

Thanks for posting the update RCF, I know lots of folks here were devoted watchers of the Hornby Eagles. Given Phoenix's death last year (2010) and how many people would have been very distressed by this turn of events, I can only imagine how tough a year it was for the Carricks. It is too bad that they cannot continue but they did provide a wonderful view into the real lives of eagles in BC for everyone. And while I will miss checking out the cam, I am glad I had the opportunity to watch even for just a little while. And I know that next spring, the adults will be back in their nest and that they will be watched over by fans at the HEG.

This is a notice that I am leaving the whole business of broadcasting the Hornby Eagles. I am absolutely torn asunder by this decision. I read over the recent posts and am reminded of all the people that just love seeing these eagles. I see all the people who followed the eagles to the Hancock Wildlife Forum and it is upsetting to abandon such good people. When I decided to quit two months ago there were hundreds of people who requested that I keep broadcasting by some other mode and they were so pleased when it happened. I am forever grateful to David Hancock who welcomed me back so the eagles could carry on to the satisfaction of so many people. And I know it will be a blow to nightowl who has been the best hostess and moderator I could ever imagine - full of wisdom, balance, and wit ... with a warm welcoming personality. IrishEyes and jbkgrants have been wonderful "oldtimers" on the Hornby Eagle thread. JudyB has watched over this thread so well and Richard arranged the transition to the new site with quiet diplomacy. I am fully aware of the upset this will be causing and genuinely wish there was some way around it.

However I have had long talks with Sheila. The hassles and stress associated with the broadcasting of the Hornby Eagles is taking the joy from our lives. We have had enough. We cannot have our lives destroyed to give thousands the pleasure of the eagles. Other people could arise above these things and continue on despite them. But we are not able to do so - thinskinned? But we are as we are, and have to decide what is best for us. So with understanding and appologies, we are now going on to new things. Who knows what? Doug and Sheila Carrick

I was following the chat for awhile, the first egg hatched and the second is expected perhaps by morning. The audio at the site is good enough that the peeping could be heard from the egg distinct from the already hatched eaglet.

I happened to return to the Hornby Eagle site and read the final report on the cause of Phoenix's death. She died of sudden and overwhelming fungal inflamation throughout both lungs, the diagnosis, acute bilateral aspergillosis pneumonia. As this was not a disease spread bird to bird, the probable source was from infected prey. Her physical status was within normal limits, and the opinion was that no intervention could have prevented her death.

Pneumonia might have been the chick's cause of death, but there could have been other problems (not discernable on the necropsy) that made him susceptible to pneumonia in the first place. Goslings and ducklings get abandonned when the parents realize there is a problem - they look and act fine and you are sure they must just have gotten lost/separated, next thing you know they (literally) drop dead.

On the upside (not that there really is one) but Phoenix died in an environment he understood without the stress of being handled and examined by humans. If he had been older and the pneumonia not so aggressive, he might have done more damage before dying. Sometimes it is the quality of life or death that one needs to be grateful for.

This morning July 17th, we received the preliminary findings from the necropsy performed on Phoenix.

Phoenix was a female. She died from acute bilateral mycotic pneumonia. Other tests results will become available over the next week, and will confirm the causative agent. Because Phoenix's death was caused by an infectious disease, sadly, she cannot be returned to Hornby Island for interment.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Maj Birch (Mountainaire Avian Rescue), Dr. Schwantje (wildlife veterinarian, British Columbia Ministry of Environment) and Dr. Bowes (avian pathologist for the British Columbia Animal Health Laboratory) for their dedication and determination to learn as much from Phoenix as they could.

I just read on the forum page that many thought Phoenix was ill. Some heard him sneezing, weezing, breathing heavily and rapidly.
I'm sure we'll all read what really happened shortly!

At 9:24 some major wingersizing. Phoenix will be 11 weeks old on Thursday (Jul 15). Eaglets fledge between 11-13 weeks - historically the Hornby Eaglets fledge at 12 weeks.

At 2:45 Phoenix does a hop-hop-hop to the edge of the nest . . .then at 6:00 finds the bones of something and carries it around the nest - for the next 2-3 minutes.

Hatch date was April 29th - so Phoenix is 8 weeks old today. . . so I had to look up fledge info:

I showed this video to the Kinderchicklets at school the other day. They really enjoyed watching Phoenix swallow the fish whole!

It was also interesting for them to learn that Eagles eat fish, unlike peregrine falcons, who eat birds. Great teaching moment. Thanks again, Jo!

Phoenix is growing so fast! (I think I say that every time I post)

Very cute Phoenix testing his legs and wings . . .it's so hard to stand and move wings at the same time without falling over (particularly with a full crop).

The cuteness is about 2:30 - 3:45ish (complete with with a standing up poop squirt)

From what one of the group members is saying the egg could stay there indefinately or at some point the parents might dispose of it. Hard to know. If it stays Doug says he will get it after they leaving for the salmon fishing.

Is it common for them to keep the other egg - will it go bad - or do the eventually either eat it or toss it form the nest.

The first 2 minutes are very cute - Phoenix discovers his feet. I can't believe how huge they are. At first I thought it was the camera angle - but if you watch further you see Phoenix standing up and those feet really are quite big. This must be the gangly adolescent stage (?). Either way - he/she's awfully cute.

Before I left for my trip to Windsor I checked and the egg still hadn't hatched much less got a pip so I doubt it will hatch. Hey we have one eaglet that is great for this pair of eagles who are around 27 years old. Their life span is 25-30 and sometimes further. Phoenix sure is a cute one.

At this stage of the "game" I am hoping that it doesn't hatch as "peeper" has almost a week of growth on the new hatchling. This makes for difficult watching as "peeper" will no doubt take out his sibling revenge on him and peck him constantly! We all know what that is like and what will happen. Of course I am thinking like "people" here and not as mama eagle. $:-\$
