Sorry this might have been explained last year, but if the red band indicates that it was a captive bird, does this mean that it escaped or that it was let free?

Red band means captive-bred and released either by a project like ours or by a breeder.  Jules on the other hand could be either - won't know until (if ever) we get a real identification on her.

This is great news that Jules has a mate. I hope that this pair is not nesting where Jules tried to next last year.

And I'm really glad to hear that they're up to some "baby-making"! Eggs on the horizon . . .  ;D

I'm sorry, forgot to post that Jules and her boyfriend were reveling in the winds this afternoon.  They were happily talking to one another on the B&B and soaring overhead on the winds.  Watching them was a great way to spend a couple of hours.

And yes, they are currently in the middle of "baby-making" as a very young fan of the peregrines' insists is the correct terminology for this activity.  :D  So after the foul weather we are to about to enjoy has past, I will hopefully find one or more eggs in one of our two nestboxes!!

The West Winnipeg male has a red band which means that he, like Jules, was in captivity - his red band says he is captive-bred.  Jules' band could indicate that she was captive-bred or just that she had been in captivity prior to finding her way to this territory.

And he is a good looking male, nice compliment for Jules, who is very pretty too  :)

Just saw Dennis's photo's of Mr X, is that a red band or red tape over a band I"m seeing???

He sure is beautiful, but then I'm partial to the dark hood if I don't mind saying so myself  :-*

There are two nestboxes in West Winnipeg.  The first box was installed in 2008 and replaced a box that was installed twenty years ago.  It was visited by Ivy & Jules in 2008 and in 2009 but they didn't use it.  The second nestbox is the condo, its on a different building.  It was installed this year and it is of a different design, more along the lines of some of the boxes used elsewhere - sort of like Elk River or U of A but tweaked for the specific location.
Well now, that's very interesting. I had no idea there had been a nestbox in West Winnipeg for 20 yrs!  :-[ Is the new nestbox "condo" a more modern design that may be more attractive to our peregrines out in that neck of the woods? ??? No, wait a minute, I'm reading over your last post again, TPC. You say they seem to like the B&B nestbox alot. Is that the old nestbox? :-\ Anyway, sure do hope to hear about eggs in one of those nestboxes, in the very near future! 8)
