Radisson - 2009 / Trey & Princess
bccs:
Still being nice to Larry eh TPC. I don't think he's buying it.
The Peregrine Chick:
Just so everyone knows, there were no eggs and not even any bird activity when Dennis and I were on the ledge on Saturday the 18th. Saw Trey but he was totally uninterested in what we were doing above him. Didn't go out on Sunday and the webcam was inactive, or so I thought. It wasn't until Monday when I was talking to the CBC gang that they mentionned that the spycam had been reactivated so I could use it until they had to go back up to finish their work. So I peaked and Princess was snuggled down at the back but it didn't look like she was incubating. Don't know what prompted me to call Dennis on my way home from work but I did and luckily he had just gotten home and was near his computer. With a minues there was theis long, deep silence on the end of the cellphone (and you know how hard that is to hear on a cell!) and I knew what Dennis was going to say. Two eggs and Princess sitting pretty on the ledge edge beside them. So the first egg was laid on the 19th (same day as last year), second on the 20th, third on 22nd. Now I'm watching the birds on the ledge cam and I haven't been able to see if we have a fourth yet. As of a few minutes ago, Trey was on the eggs and all was calm (knock on wood) not much wind, a very pleasant scene all in all.
Okay, now about the cam - the cam won't go "on" until early in May, about 10-14 days before estimated hatch date (the Victoria Day weekend) - sorry folks. When it does come on, you will all be blown away - the image and streaming is amazing!!! If you thought last year was good, wait until you see this year! Actually, CBC has similar video running elsewhere (not a cam, just video) - I'll see if I can find a/the link and you can get preview of the quality of the image this year. But again, no sound. Just not technically do-able at this site. Now if they had used the nestbox we might have tried even though the wind tends to howl through the louvres.
Now that we have all our software talking to one another, Larry our Camera God is going to see if he make the remote access feature of the camera work so that I can download short videos and adjust camera angle/etc from wherever I (or he) is. Very cool.

--- End quote ---
We won't technically be announcing it but it will be hard to miss when it happens I suspect. Heck, don't even have all the details worked out yet so as we go along, we will see. And no, we won't have the cam on while we are doing it.
--- Quote from: allikat on April 23, 2009, 08:35 ---Hey TPC, any thoughts on putting a roof on it...kinda like what Alberta's nest is like or even Ohio's?
--- End quote ---
There definitely will not be a roof on it. One of our major concerns is safety and since the site is so inaccessible (not sure I can get to it yet!) we have no way to be able to ensure that bits of the box won't go flying off and become a hazard. So the plan is to have an open box that is raised from the roof. It will keep the profile low thereby reducing the risk of "bits" going airborne but will still provide protection from water from below. The parents are responsible for dealing with the water from above. After we see how this goes we may rework the design for future years but this is not a place I want to encourage our peregrines to nest, it is just has too many problems so this is short-term at the moment and we will keep working on what else we can/should do.
