1800 hrs (local) - looks like the wind may be starting to make its shift.  Princess is asleep with her head in the gravel and the feather fluffing seems to be different now.  The cam is still getting whacked but it's a bit more exposed.  In whatever case, I think the wind is shifting so we may have rain tonight but the birds won't have to contend with the winds.

Strange because the nesting pair at the St Lawrence site here in Mississauga leave the heads everywhere around the parking lot,  The employees are forever finding them in the parking lot where they leave their cars.  Maybe poop-hawks don't have tasty heads?  dunno.   ???

Had a friend that I used to house sit for and he had a pool. Spent many an afternoon yelling at the grackles who were dive-bombing the surface, trying to drop their bombs of poop. Felt so smug and self-righteous when I was able to to ward them off. Little victories, take em where we can get em.

The gifts vanished like trash, eggshells and eggs from the nestledge.  Not sure where they dump stuff but it must be a really big pile after all these years.  I keep thinking its the river, songbirds will dump little poo-packets from their chicks in swimming pools in the spring ....  ;)

1545 hrs (local) - Princess is facing into the wind now and her eyes are closed.  She is in fact getting less "fluffed-up" than the cam is getting bounced in the wind.  It is suppose to drop off later this afternoon/evening and shift to the west so hopefully the Hotel will do its job and provide some shelter tomorrow.

Those are a couple of the concerns we have had to try to work with with our design for a permanent structure.  And its not just wind and the birds, its what will the wind do the structure and how safe will it be.  Then its how do we get the equipment (drills etc) up 14 stories where there is not power ... and so on and so on and so on.  The nest tray we are trying to get up there will be a temporary measure, we will probably remove it at the banding.  It has sides that are probably as high as the ledge edges so may provide a bit of cover from the wind, and it will raise the chicks so we don't have to worry about water from below.  Water from above however Trey and Princess will have to be responsible for ... We hope to be able to install a permanent structure later in the summer - the weather will still be good and we can hopefully do it properly.  So we could be doing 3 trips up the side of this building this year - oh joy!  ::)

Actually, head is usually the favourite morsel - when the males bring in food, rarely does it still have its head, and its not for aerodynamic reasons  ;)  When courting, if the male brings "gifts" with heads, he's definitely smitten (or seriously not letting this one get away).  One year, Trey's Mom was courted by a male that laid out about 20 different species of birds (there were some repeats of species too) on all the ledges all around the building at nest box height.  I had a wicked and wonderful time peering through the louvres trying to identify them.  After a couple of days, she accepted his suit and all the "gifts" disappeared - and no, she didn't eat them ...  :-X
