Helen B, apparently the freshly killed food they eat has enough moisture in it to meet their need for fluids.  

We have seen the chicks get a spray or two of water during the banding, but I think TPC said that was because of the stress of the procedure that they need a bit of extra, rather than they were dehydrated to begin with.

it is 7:57 here in Winnipeg and the chicks are very active.  It is cooling down a bit now so hopefully they will have a good noght to sleep.  Supposed to be very warm over the ext week.

A question is how do the chicks stay hydrated when it is so hot, as there does not appear to be water intake.  Just wondering about.

I haven't been able to watch as regularly in previous years, have never seen a chick fledge, so I'm really looking forward to catching a first flight with one of these little ones. But you must just watch with your heart in your mouth until you're sure they can actually do it.

These close-ups are great -- it seems the chicks change and grow noticeably every day. Although they're getting a little steadier on their feet, it's still hard to believe these awkward little critters are growing into big beautiful birds like their parents. Soaring in the sky just doesn't fit in the picture quite yet . . . but soon . . .

They crack me up the way they spread their wings and legs out ;D  Especially the one that is using the grate as a "pillow"

I have never noticed chicks "lounging" as much as these 3 do, they get themselves in some comfy positions when they sleep
