Actually, the rain was a good test for them ... see how smart they are - they stayed in a group and against the wall and/or in a corner when the wind was high.  Stayed in the high spots when it rained - new gravel in north corner when the wind was blowing, on the gravel or two on the vent when the wind wasn't blowing.  And they were smart enough to not exercise their wings when the wind was blowing.  If they stay that smart during fledging it will be wonderful!!

They are flapping differently....you can see it when they finally get the rhythm going!  It's wonderful to see.

Good night our 3 little flapping chicks...Until tomorrow!

Djust tuned in to see one one on the vent and a projectile poop come flying across the nest .

Awwwww! I've been a member of the Forum since June 1st and I've yet to observe all of these exciting projectile poops that everyone keeps talking about! :(

It's quite a sight Kinderchic, think projectile vomit, only out of the other end. The chicks bend right over and let 'er rip.

:o :o    LOL LOL

If you watch the chicks flapping now, its different.  Before the wings were up high and they were basically just waving them around getting used to the idea that they have them.  Now the flapping is practicing to use the wings, there is real power and purpose and the wings are more horizontal now ... the female in particular is doing it ...

Hopefully the chicks won't flap much tomorrow with the forecasted high winds ...

Yeah the rain sure had an affect alright. But it is great seeing them preening and flapping their wings. And yes Jo the female is south of the drain.

So cute to see two on the drain cover. . . .lots of flapping on the bottom of the screen by the girl (I think). Nice to stretch those wings after being cooped up all day.

Hmmmm....maybe there needs to be some kind of fundraiser to raise the money in case the ledge is used again next year.

Aw! Cuuuute! I've never seen 2 together on the drain cover before. And they appear to be preening/grooming each other. Is that possible?

TPC; Is there anything, within the law, to "encourage" T&P to use the penthouse or is it not to their liking. Too new?

Box is two years old, they have been in there and have made nestscrapes and all the other nesting kind of things that would normally have indicated that they would be choosing the box this year.  I'm going to trade out the gravel later this summer, maybe something a little smaller in case they want something "softer" (can gravel really be softer?).  Other than that, not sure what we can do.  What I do know is that the design is the same, the box is just bigger.  So maybe next year ....  :-\

Maybe next year if they use the east ledge leaving the rubbermaid standing up on edge with rocks on one side? Something to get out of the weather?

Not sure that we will be spending $2,100 to install a $7 plastic bin again next spring.  If we do anything on that ledge it will be more permanent and may or may not have "roofing".  I have spoken at length here on the Forum about the problems/difficulties/considerations involved in installing anything on this length.  Now we know it costs about $2,000 to rent the swingstage to work on the ledge which has to be factored in as well.  Donations so far this year will just cover the two swing stage rentals (for the tray installation and the banding) so far rather than our normal expenses, so we will have to look for other sources of funding for a third trip up to install a more permanent structure, so long as we can come up with a design that won't endanger the birds, the hotel and its staff as well as the pedestrians and traffic below - we can't access the ledge so we can't fix/check/maintain it regularly.
