Allen's Hummingbirds - California / Phoebe
birdcamfan:
She is amazing. She seems able to produce eggs in short order. I hope she has better luck this year. The babies are so cool to watch and they develop so fast. It's a great webcam.
Kinderchick:
Yes, you are right, Elaine. If Phoebe removed the eggs, then she likely knew that they were not viable. I heard alot of crows around the terrritory. Maybe they were damaged by crows and then Phoebe removed them? :-\ Last year, she had 5 clutches! :o Only 3 chicks in total fledged successfully, though. But as you've said, at least we can look forward to another clutch! :)
Elaine L:
On Phoebe's Facebook site, someone reported that Phoebe kicked the eggs out of the nest. If this is true, I expect they were not viable. I am sorry to read this, but the main thing is that Phoebe is o.k., and can still have another clutch.
Kinderchick:
Just read this on the Hummingbird website...
Both eggs were found on the ground this morning, broken. Phoebe will have another clutch soon.
I imagine it won't be till sometime in December, though, when she will lay more eggs. :-\ She will likely need to replenish the calcium in her wee little body.
Kinderchick:
--- Quote from: Elaine L on November 03, 2010, 12:15 ---Kinderchick, I can't see any eggs in the nest today; the other day, I saw one. Are they well hidden?

I'm not sure what happened to Phoebe's eggs, Elaine. :-\ Yesterday, there were clearly 2 eggs in her nest but today when we looked, we couldn't see any eggs either... I'm wondering if a crow came along and ate them, like last year? ??? They are, after all, the size of a tic tac! :o We didn't even see Phoebe or her partner at all this morning. :'(
