Lucky you! Don't tell TPC (or the other members here) but the Great Blue Heron has been my favourite bird since I was a little girl growing up on Lake of the Woods. There is something prehistoric, almost sacred, about it.
Anyone know any falcon poems?

Cooper, go into the poetry thread, seems to me I created a poem or two about our Radisson pair. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Oh, bccs, our poetess
I've read your poems with glee
I'd wax on here more eloquently
But now I have to pee.

Saoirse:
I'm a big fan of the blue heron, too, Cooper. When I was growing up about an hour or so north of the city, we used to always see at least one blue heron in the water-filled ditches near Traverse Bay corner (on our way to the beach) -- the ditches are still there, but the herons are much more rare now. Love the piece from the Michael Ondaatje poem -- now I'll have to go looking for the rest of it . . .

I did, however, see something I have never seen in downtown Winnipeg before. It looked like a blue heron came flying over the Delta Hotel, flew to above the Hydro building, circled 4 or 5 times, and then flew off to the west. Came from the Red River and then flew west following the Assiniboine River?

The blue heron you saw may well be "my" heron. We have one that has staked out fishing rights on the Assiniboine for years (at about where the Perimeter Hwy crosses the river). It thrills me to see him every time we canoe down that way.
Here's a bit from a poem by Michael Ondaatje that I think describes the heron's flight so perfectly. I think the poem is called "Inner Tube" or something like that - and I can quite imagine floating on the lake in one looking up at the sky and seeing:
"a blue heron
with its awkward
broken backed flap
upside down"
Anyone know any falcon poems?
Mother Hen:
and all I saw when leaving last night was rain and more rain! Nice and sunny so far today.
