I was thinking it was Ivy on the chicks but what do I know??  ::)  :-\  I was judging by how he/she was fussing.....changing positions, pecking at the gravel/bugs, etc. so am probably all wrong.

Princess has the 4 chicks tucked in nice & cozy - she's passing the time snapping at a big persistan bug that has decided to come for a visit.  ;D - Follows it with her eyes then makes a head-lunge whenever it flies too close - and all without budging off the babies!!  :-*

Sometimes it can depend on how long between hatches and if the eggshells are out of handy reach.  If they are close by or the chicks are hatching out slowly, Mom can nibble on the eggshells between the egg-citement ( ;D).  Princess usually eats most of them.  In this case, the wind blew a couple of them close to the camera, think one below right out of the nest.  They will disappear either on their own, or with peregrine assistance or I'll retrieve them when I'm next at the box if they are still there.
Interestingly, the Kinderchicklets REALLY like looking at those eggshells that have blown close to the webcam lens! :D Because Princess laid her eggs further away from the camera lens and because the 'chicklets  haven't really had a chance to see the chicks up close yet, them seem to get a kick out of seeing those eggshells! 8) So I hope you won't be removing them from the nestbox too soon, TPC. ;)

TPC, I appreciated the answers to the Kinderchicklets' questions. and have a follow up
question to the query of the pebble eating.

Is the Chick crop that we watch fill up through a feeding the same structure that becomes the gizzard in the adult?

Another question.
In the WFP article, banding was mentioned for mid June.  When will the exact date be set?

May 27th and Day 3 for the chicks. From this point we should begin to see a growth spurt. They grow so quickly from all that protein they devour. (Shudder)  :P  Ivy will have to pump a lot of pigeon to bulk himself up to cover all the chicks. He will have to splay himself out. Before long, the chicks will begin to pump Papa.

Really enjoy your answers to questions - general, and of course from kinderchicklets.  I never thought about falcon's hearing - must be pretty good, too.
Also, I'd be happy to reach into the nest to get those egg shells...
or we could  could bid on that task as a fund raiser!
Sorry - I need to learn to edit.

Birth Announcement in the Winnipeg Free Press ....

Princess and Ivy, the Radisson Hotel's peregrine falcons, have hungry new mouths to feed.

The raptors' four eggs hatched on Monday and Tuesday.

The live-streaming "falcon cam" that broadcasts from the wooden nest box on the hotel's roof appears to show four healthy chicks, although they're so squashed together that it's difficult to count the downy babies.

"They all look good. They all have been sitting up, begging for food," said Tracy Maconachie, co-ordinator of Manitoba's Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project.

In mid-June, Maconachie and her team will put identification bands on the chicks' legs and determine their sex.

The mother, Princess, usually keeps the chicks tucked under her between meals. The father, Ivy, has been bringing home prey such as pigeons and gulls. The chicks have their first feeding at about 5 a.m. and get fed every two to three hours.

Maconachie is posting videos at www.youtube.com/theperegrinechick, so falcon fans can see what feedings are like.

Manitoba's other two pairs of breeding peregrines, one in Brandon and one in west Winnipeg, are each incubating four eggs, expected to hatch in June.

And thanks to Alison Mayes at the WFP for tracking me down in a parking lot to get all the details!!   :D
Great Birth announcement TPC!!

What a great article! I'm sure Alison Mayes felt it was well worth her efforts to find you, TPC.
